It’s a beautiful time of the year in Minnesota, and you should take full advantage of all our natural sights! No matter which direction you’re going, there are fall scenic drives to enjoy for a day trip.

If You’re Heading North

The North Shore shows off a beautiful array of vivid reds and yellows, which makes it a popular area during the fall. When driving up, aim to take the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway which makes up around 80 miles of road. It goes through the Iron Range and along Lake Superior, offering a wide array of natural stops along the way. To really get the most out of it, you can find a hiking trail along the way to get out and experience autumn up close. Otherwise, there are no towns along the route, so you will need to chart your own route when stopping for food. Learn more about the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway on their website.

If You’re Heading East

Drive out to the Eastern part of the Twin Cities to begin this route at Point Douglas, right near Hastings. Then go north to experience the St. Croix Scenic Byway and its impressive 124 miles of road. As you follow the river, you’ll get to experience the bluffs of the St. Croix and then more woods and cliffs as you continue north. The byway offers many historical stops and natural areas along the way, which have been planned out through the connected nonprofit. Plan your trip through their resources.

If You’re Heading South

Take a trip along the Minnesota and Wisconsin border to arrive just north of the Great Bluffs State Park. This begins the Apple Blossom Scenic Drive, an easy drive of 17 miles of rolling hills and apple orchards. Make a stop to pick up some apples, cider, and pumpkins to really get in the fall spirit. Then, if you want to keep going, you can get onto Highway 61 which takes you on the Great River Road, a designated All-American Road that follows the Mississippi River.

If You’re Heading West

Begin just south of the Twin Cities and follow the river on the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway. This route goes through many towns that offer historical stops, downtown areas with unique shops, and nostalgic restaurants. For nature lovers, you can even stop at one of the many hiking trails along the way for a walk or to do some birding. The byway has a website that supports all the resources you need for your trip: things to do, itineraries, and events. Check it out and plan your trip.
